Alaska Sockeye Salmon | Original Earth Pigment Watercolour Painting

Description

An original watercolour painting of an Alaska Sockeye salmon, created with handmade earth and mineral pigment paints in my Yukon studio.

Part of an ongoing exploration of the natural world through colour, material and place, this painting celebrates the extraordinary beauty of Pacific salmon through the rich, granular textures of pigments drawn from the earth.

Unlike commercially manufactured watercolours, these handmade paints retain much of the physical character of their mineral origins. Pigment settles, gathers and creates unexpected variations across the paper, making the material itself an important part of the artwork.

An original work, finished by hand

This one-of-a-kind painting measures 9 × 12 inches and is mounted on a 1-inch-deep wood cradle panel, giving it a substantial, contemporary presentation.

The painted surface is finished with a protective wax coating that enhances the tactile qualities of the pigments while preserving the character of the original watercolour. Subtle variations in the wax surface and pigment texture are intentional characteristics of this handmade work.

A connection to the earth

Each painting includes a signed Certificate of Authenticity with an embedded NFC tag. Simply tap the certificate with a compatible smartphone to visit the Earth Pigment page on my website, where you can explore the materials and processes behind my painting practice.
